I don't remember who told me but rpm maintains a database of what it
knows is installed. If you install a library and rpm doesn't know about
it (you didn't use rpm to install it), rpm will act like the library
isn't there. My first choice would be to take the library out, and find
an rpm'd version to install, and then install the package that depends
on the library. I don't like to use --nodeps.
There may be other possibilities. Check the rpm docs.
