Start not Begin in setting partitions

Sorry for yet another question, but I'm trying to repartition the hard
drive, and whatever I do (including trying the "move begin" under the
experts menu) I can't get begin to be the same as start for my new
partitions. Consequently, the partitions won't verify. The new ones
are subdivision of an old one, and they begin where that old one
began, rather than where they now start.

Can this be a problem with my hard disk? I found one mail archive
that sounded relevant about setting the number of heads, cylinders and
sectors, but I don't have a BSD label so I can't cross-check this
info. I only know what the partitioning thing itself tells me.

This is still the install over the old a.out version of linux
preserving a DOS partition (I finally gave up and took the robot apart
and stuck another ethernet board in it! Fortunately, that seems to
work.)
