try using the actual device instead of the link.
for instance my mouse actually resides at /dev/cua1. when i tell x that my
mouse is at /dev/mouse which does indeed point at /dev/cua1, the mouse
will not move. so, i just use /dev/cua1. 

don't ask me why. i have never taken the time to figure this out.
