changing root on rescue disk

Hello again --
I'm having an apparently standard problem with LILO not dealing with a
large disk well, -- it stops at "LI". I need to be able to mount one
of my partitions as root, but I can't get it to work right from the
install/rescue disk. I've tried typing:
linux root=/dev/hda3 [sic -- yup, that's where / should be]
and
rescue root=/dev/hda3
but I can't seem to convince it to come up correctly. Apparently
this was a standard operation under RH 3.x I need to alter my lilo.conf
file (I think) because it's ignoring the fact I have the /boot on a
different device (/dev/hda2) in a sufficiently low cylinder number
to be run.
After booting off rescue, I can mount /dev/hda2, but interestingly
can't mount /dev/hda3 anyway, so perhaps there's just something wrong
with my partition? Though fdisk in the install program says its OK.
Thanks in advance,
Joanna
