ld.so

I know that this thread is getting old on the redhat-list; perhaps 
it is better served here.  I am trying to install lesstif-0.81-1.i386.rpm
and am getting a failed dependency error on the file ld.so.1.  I did a
query and found that I have ld.so-1.7.14-4 installed.  I even tried making
a sym link /lib/ld.so.1, linking it to /lib/ld.1.7.14.  No luck.  Where 
does ld.so.1 come from?
