Hi Joshua,
Thanks for your reply. I think was pushing my luck a little bit too much (I
expected not to be the onlyone encountering this). My networking is indeed
based on IP.
The results of an ifconfig -a (only the eth0-part) is:

Interrupt: 10 Base address:0x300
Because I can see that the light on the HUB is switched on while Linux is
booting I suspected that the card might be broadcasting something. I tried
to configure another computer to the very same IP-address. This was no
problem and no conflict appear to arise.
I forgot also to tell that a ping results in a 100% packet loss.
