Thanks for your reply. The 10-base-T hub is not the problem. There are 4
machines (2 linux, 2 Windows-95 <- sorry for that) and 1 router connected
to the hub. I tried pinging from all machines to all machines. This was no
problem except for the one featuring this problem. The cables are correctly
connected and not into a cross-over. I did try to switch cables around so
that I could be sure that the port was not the problem. This did not help
me any further. I tried pinging to the other machine and left the router
and 2 other machines out. This did not change the situation. 

I also tried pinging to another machine without any computer (but the
troubled one) connected to the hub. I did not see the packet-light
blinking. So I get the feeling, that the Linux does send packets to the
network card. However the packets are never actually transmitted. The fact
that Linux can see the card on installation and boot and address this and
the fact the card is a replacement indicates to me that it is very likely
to be a Linux problem.
