Hi,
I am having trouble installing my CD-ROM drivers and other applications. I was told that the Errata had information about Back Pack CD-ROM's and I have repeated their instructions which didn't work completely:
>Solution:
> (10-Jun-1997) Until a fix is available, users can manually
>create a /dev/bpcd device using the following commands:
>
> su
> mknod /dev/bpcd b 41 0
> chown root:disk /dev/bpcd
> chmod 660 /dev/bpcd
>
> Users can then mount the BackPack CD-ROM using:
>
> mount -t iso9660 /dev/bpcd /cdrom
I followed the instructions but when I tried to mount the device I got an error
message that it couldn't mount the device and try "insmod device".
So I switched to /lib/modules/2.0.30/cdrom and tried "insmod bpcd.o". This
would not work so I tried some of the others like sbpcd.o but none of these
worked. Finally I tried insmod mcdx.o and then bpcd.o again. I rebooted many
times and everytime I had to do something similar to this. "insmod bpcd.o"
would never work the first time. Then I got the message as follows:
bpcd 0.19: found CD-ROM GCD-R560B, ID 11, using port 0x378 in 8 bit mode.
lp: Driver configured but no interfaces found
Then I was able to do the mount command you gave and I got access to the
cdrom. However when it mounted I get some errors. The message is as follows:
"mount: block device /dev/bpcd is write protected, mounting read only"
"bpcd: bp_completion (close door): status:51 erro:60"
So my questions are the following:
1. How to I properly insmod the driver? Do I need to rebuild the kernel and if so
how do I load the files from the CD needed for this? I tried to rebuild the kernel
and it said I did not have the necessary files loaded.
2. How do I get the CD-ROM to mount automatically so that I don't have to go
through all this each time I reboot?
3. How do I eliminate the message : lp: Driver configured but no interfaces
found
4. How to I cure the message: "bpcd: bp_completion (close door): status:51
error:60"? I am allowed to access the drive but I can't open the drive and put in
a new CD.
This really leads to my final question which is that I was trying to access the
CD-ROM so that I could install XFree86 because MetroX didn't not have a driver
that would work with my laptop.
After I got the CD-ROM to kind of work I was able to install XFree86 after
removing Metro. They have a video driver listed for my laptop
(Cirrus Logic GD7548). I had to configure the monitor as a custom and I tried
carefully to put in the correct refresh rates obtained from Micron and used
SVGA 800*640 mode since that is what my display is.
When I got done and it said all was OK, I started X with the startx command.
What I get is a very odd colored screen that is all washed out with nothing
readable. The Ctrl Alt + and backspace routines would not work and I had to
do a cold reboot. I went back and tried a few other combinations such as the
extended SVGA but nothing seemed to work. I also compared my Xconfig file
with another Micron Millennia user who had posted his on the Web and had
been successful in getting X running.
I am hoping that it is something simple and that you can steer me in the right
direction.
Thanks for all of the help,
Rupert Dance
