some help setting up ppp, please...

hi all,
i've been trying to set up ppp to dial my isp. i am using the instructions
from the 'ppp setup tips' from redhat's web site. it says to enter :
	export DISPLAY=<your machine name>:0
	netcfg &
i have two initial questions:
1) how do i find and/or set the machine name ??
2) when i run netcfg after exporting what i think is my machine name it
says it cannot identify the machine name. when i run netcfg w/out exporting
DISPLAY, the netcfg tool locks up as soon as i click on the 'add' button
(under interfaces). any suggestions ??
