IEEE
802.3 describes Ethernet
802.5 describes Token-Ring
It seems that there will forever be confusion between the IEEE standards,
and the Novell implementation.
Historically, Novell servers (prior to 3.12) by default use a particular
frame type, or encapsulation for ethernet that they call 802.3
This 802.3, now referred to as 802.3 RAW by Novell, does not support
Logical Link Control as described by the IEEE 802.2 specification. Novell
subsequently introduced a new default encapsulation which they refer to as
Ethernet_802.2. This encapsulation IS compliant with the IEEE 802.3 spec,
and includes support for LLC.
What this means to you is this: If you want to connect to Netware 3.11 and
below, you will need to use Ethernet_802.3 encapsulation. If you want to
connect to a Netware 3.12 or Netware 4, you will need to use the
Ethernet_802.2 frame type.... Probably. The frame type used on your
network is configurable by your NetWare manager, so your mileage may vary.
