Re: Sony CDU31A

Ulrich, et al:

I hope you can assist me with a similar situation.
I have a cdu33a Sony drive that is attached to an Opti-Mad sound card on my old
486 ISA/VLB architecture machine. I could not get the install to recognize it
using the cdu31a driver (though I did not try your fix, suggested below). While
investigating this situation I discovered that there is a second driver that may
be appropriate in my case, the 'isp16' driver. Unfortunately, this cd-rom option
is not offered by install, so I was outta-luck there too.
I worked around the problem by borrowing an ATAPI IDE drive from work, so now
I've finished the install, but I have a couple questions:

1) Which is the correct driver in my case, cdu31a, or insp16?

2) How can I install 'insp16' as a module (the cd-rom how to and other info
available on the Red Hat sight is suspicially lacking in this detail- I can only
find the syntax to boot it out of the kernel)?

3) How can I *uninstall* the ATAPI drive, and replace it with my cdu33a?

In the end, I may just fangle the ATAPI drive outta my boss, we have extras!

An unrelated question (and realize that as Linux goes I am *very* green): I was
never prompted to insert the second cd-rom that comes with the "official" Red Hat
distribution.... I notice that it is filled with rpm's for the most part. Should
I do anything with this disc? Should I load all the rpm's, or what?

  Thanks for the help,
    stnick slip net
