Re: problem with XFree86

I also had the same problem but my graphics card is an ATI 3D Rage II.
RedHat Linux 4.2 comes with XFree86 v 3.2.9, you want v 3.3.1. This can be
downloaded from the RedHat ftp server. You need at least the following
files:

    XFree86-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm
    XFree86-75dpi-fonts-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm
    XFree86-100dpi-fonts-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm
    XFree86-libs-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm
    XFree86-Mach64-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm

These constitute about an 11 MB download.

You then need to install these using rpm. Use man rpm from the prompt if you
want more detailed info. Anyway the commands you need to use are:

rpm -e XFree86-fonts

rpm -Uv XFree86-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm XFree86-75dpi-fonts-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm
XFree86-100dpi-fonts-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm XFree86-75dpi-fonts-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm
XFree86-libs-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm XFree86-Mach64-3.3.1-1.i386.rpm

I am assuming you didn't install any other packages that have dependencies
on XFree86-3.2.9.

You haven't said what kind of monitor you have. If you have a supported one
then it should be no problem.

Next run the following program:

Xconfigurator

This presents a series of question similar to those asked when you first
set-up Linux.
