Tweaking for masq speed info?

Now that I have the ip maswing working and am using it, I have noticed
the transfer rates are a somewhat low.  Are there any speed tweaks discussed
anywhere?  Or has anyone discovered a few, or is a slow down a reasonable and expected
performance hit given the benefits.  I'm running three machines through a 28.8 dial up although 
only one machine is normally on the interent. The server is a 486 133 with 32 meg.
