Installing Redhat on IBM-SCSI-Disks without Vendor Entry

Hi All,

I have the same problem as 'LinKo Webmaster' and 'Maurice Gittens'
have when installing on an IBM harddisk (i.e. DFRS***).

It is not possible to install Redhat 5.0 Power-Tools on my IBM-SCSI
disk. When trying
to partition the disk the setup fails with the message:

(dump copied from LinKo Webmaster's previous posting)
--------------------------------------
install exited abnormally -- recieved signal 11
sending termination signals .. done
sending kill signals.. done
unmounting file systems.
/tmp/rhimage
/proc
you may safely reboot your system
--------------------------------------

When looking at the file /proc/scsi/scsi the entry starts as follows

Vendor: Model: DFR.....

I guess the problem is that the install program tries to show me the
disk's vendor and
other data before partitioning. It seems to fail while parsing this file
because my
harddisk doesn't provide a vendor name.

Is there any way to work around this bug?

It is no problem to patch the ncrxxx SCSI-module to send an 'Unknown' as
vendor string. But
how to use this module without access to the harddisk? Is there a way to
mount a floppy
containing this module?

Best regards,

  Torsten Spellerberg
