I recall seeing this behaviour when networking was set up but there was no
network attached or no functioning name-server. I'm not sure which was the
determining factor (I suspect DNS). At any rate, the problem vanishes when
you have an actual functioning network connection *AND* a functioning,
connected name-server.
In the meantime, you can temporarily modify the startups so as not to start
sendmail (rc2.d .. rc5.d).
