Can not use tape drive

Folks,
I've been running RHL 4.0 or 4.2 for about a year now,
happily backing up with tar to a Travan tape drive.
I upgraded to 5.0, and now it's unusable. The kernel
is configured to support SCSI drives, it sees the
Adaptec 7240/2840/2940 during upgrade, and so on.
But I can not access it at all.
./MAKEDEV st0 proceeds without error,
as does
mknod -m 660 /dev/st0 9 0
But trying to tar to it gets the reply that the device can not
support that operation. Even a simple "scsi_info /dev/st0"
fails on open(). All other devices (CD, floppy) appear OK.
When I boot as Windoze-95, the tape works fine.
Does anyone recognize this? I'd appreciate any help!
