iMike,
here is the rpm output:
{campbell}53: % rpm -qi portmap
Name : portmap Distribution: Hurricane
Version : 4.0 Vendor: Red Hat Software
Release : 7 Build Date: Tue Oct 28 11:07:41 1997
Install date: Mon Dec 1 08:00:16 1997 Build Host: porky.redhat.com
Group : Networking/Daemons Source RPM: portmap-4.0-7.src.rpm
Size : 45965
Packager : Red Hat Software <bugs redhat com>
Summary : RPC port mapper
Description :
The portmapper manages RPC connections, which are used by protocols
such as NFS and NIS. The portmap server must be running on machines
which act as servers for protocols which make use of the RPC mechanism.
This portmapper supports hosts.{allow, deny} type access control.

I will go grab the release 8 from redhat and see if it makes any difference.
Reading the portmap doc indicates that I need to reboot to restart it
if it dies...

I'm modifying the startup file to turn on verbose logging as well, maybe
I'll sort this out yet...
