Two years ago, I wrote an HTML generator for a hierarchical database (based
on place names). I wanted to preserve the blanks but ran into so many
problems I gave up and replace blanks with underscores. (30,000 files). I
came fairly close, being able to descend through directory names containing
spaces but not being able to return through them.
In this case it would appear that translation between file names and urls is
inconsistent. I found this to be a problem between Netscape (at that time
probably 3.0) and IIS (maybe be as late as 2.0) but the other combinations
of browser and server (NCSA, CERN and Apache) were not without event either,
not to mention serverless cases (browsing a CD).
It is time for the scripts.
