MetroX on a Dell XPi

I've got RedHat 5.0 (2.0.32) installed on a Dell Latitude XPi, 90MHz.
Everything's OK in text mode but things get messy once I try
running 'startx': the screen starts off looking pretty close to
what it should but includes random characters and a few thin vertical
bars. Moving the mouse causes it to jump all over the place, leaving
droppings all over. Text in the xterm window is legible and I can
get out using the mouse but no text appears in these menu.
As far as I can tell, everything I could configure was set
correctly: Dell's support page indicates that this portable has
a Cirrus CL-GD7543 video chip w/ 1 MB ram. The mouse is a PS/2
compatible and I'm just trying to get just the 640x480 @ 60Hz
display working for now; nothing fancy.
This may be a red herring but there's 25 messages in /var/log/Xerrors
along the lines of "Symbol xx from modules yy.a is unresolved!"
(where 'yy' is either "libextmod" or "libvga256").
Thanks in advance. -- Frank
