sound card

i've had heaps of trouble with an Avance als100 based sound card, and am
looking to get a new one.  Does anyone have recommendations for a
decent performing, cheap, well supported card/chipset, and preferrably one
that is sold by most outlets?  I want sound under win95/NT/Redhat5.


ps.  My sound card at the moment seems to work (ie it will play cd, play
midis wavs) but when i try to play doom/quake under win95/Linux, i get
lots of background noise.  I compiled my kernel for sound card to emulate
a sb16, (i'm pretty sure its sb16 compatible).  If any can give me a clue
what mite be going wrong please do.
