Well, we just took a stab in the dark and came out okay.
I haven't ever used WinAnything for burning, but under Linux
I use mkisofs and cdrecord (XCDRoast is an X wrapper for this,
command-line, burn program.)
We use a Philips CDD2000. Works great, does 2x burns.
It doesn't do CD-RW, so the other drive mentioned may be better,
but this one is older and probably pretty cheap.
Note: Since you are recompiling your kernel anyway (other thread),
make sure you compile in Generic SCSI device support (/dev/sgXX
devices). cdrecord and hence, XCDRoast, require them.
