The Redhat 5.1 Intel Hardware Compatability Listing shows the following as
"Tier 1 Supported":
Adaptec AHA-294x(W/UW/D/WD), AHA-394x(W), AHA-398x(W), AHA-274x,
AHA-284x; Adaptec AIC-777x, AIC-785x, AIC-787x, AIC-788x.
I use the 2940UW in my system with both narrow and wide devices without
trouble. I did not have to play with any BIOS settings. I do get lots
of warnings during kernel bootup about double-checking that Termination
is correct (since my BIOS is set to "automatic termination"), but in
fact it does correctly determine my cabling configuration and set the
adapter Termination correctly.
I should mention that I have upgraded to 2.0.35, while Redhat 5.1 came
with 2.0.34 (there's a 2.0.35 source RPM available from the Redhat site).
Also, I have an Adaptec 1542B controller for my external devices, and in
order to get both to work I had to build the kernel with both drivers
compiled in statically (otherwise the 1542B driver wouldn't autoload).
