Rob,
I'm using SMB with two Linux boxes and a Win98 box.  I had edit the
/etc/smb.conf file by hand and then reboot.  There are comments in the file
that tell you what needs to be setup.  Also, you need to run the
smbpasswd -a <username> program on your Linux boxes.  It's easier if you use
the SAME user name and password on all you systems when setting things up
the first time.  I didn't have to set up DNS or host names or any of that
stuff.  Keep it simple at first... leave those blank.
