Rob,
Sorry, I didn't see your reply until reading Kevin Colby's later. I am
assuming you already have SMB services installed on your Linux box, which
may have occurred when you installed RH 5.1.
With that assumption:
1. I use Midnight Commander from the command line and the little editor it
includes. I love this file browser. Type mc at the shell prompt.
2. From inside MC I browse to the /etc directory and scroll down to the
smb.conf file using the mouse or the kbd. I highlight that file and click
on edit (not the Unix I remember!!!). You can then use the editor to edit,
read, save, etc. that file. Make a backup of your original first! I copy
to smb.conf.original.
3. I then exit MC after saving my changes. Since I'm lazy I use
CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot which issures a shutdown -t3 -r now command I
believe.
NOTE: You are supposed to be able to use smb stop and then smb start to make
the changes take effect. But, this has never worked for me.
I did all this after COMPLETING the installation of Linux from the hard
drive that Linux was installed to. Perhaps I misunderstood your question
yesterday as Kevin seems to indicate. Sorry about that if that's the case.
Barry
P.S. And thank you Kevin.
