I am not sure this applies, but I also had a few problems with X
Windows.
I solved them using both:
Xconfigurator
and
XF86Setup
(XF86Setup does not seem to be distributed with RD5.1 disks, so I
downloaded
from ftp.redhat.com/updates/...).
They generated the file: xf86config (in the /usr/X11R6/lib/ directory,
if I remember correctly) which I then modified opportunately.
So, my suggestion is: take a look to the "ftp.redhat.com/update"
directory
and download XF86Setup*.i386.rpm.
(I also found useful the official RH FAQ in the chapter regarding
XWindows)
