A few weeks ago I installed redhat linux 5.1 on my system. It worked
fine, without problems. However, when I was fooling around trying to
learn the linux way, I managed to screw up the windows configuration on
a vfat mounted drive. I deleted the hole system. It was unstable anyway.
After reinstalling windows I tried to install linux. In stead of just
making a swap partition and a big root on one of my two drives, I made
the swap at the first drive together with windows/dos and a 4 partitions
on the other (/ ,/usr ,/usr/local ,/home ). The installation went on
without problems. When the system at last was going to reboot it hanged
with the line "rebooting". I don't know if it explains the problem.
Anyway I turned the power of and on. The system booted and displayed the
usual bunch of message. But ... it stopped at the line "Finding module
dependencies".
I turned of the computer, booted windows and read the faq's and searched
the mail archive without results. Then I tried reinstalling linux. But
the same thing happened. No fun. I'm only able to boot with the
emergency boot parameter.
The only unsual thing about my system is 0.5 mb of bad sectors on the
drive where I installed linux. But in my opinion it shouldn't be a
problem as long as the installion program checks for bad sectors. My
drives are IDE. The only difference between my old installation (which
worked) and now is the 4 partitions. Does anybody have an idea of what
my problem is? If I should change the configuration files please help me
on the way. I am new to linux and don't know which editor to use.
Thanx for any help ...--
