I am experiencing a few problems with the RedHat 5.1 installation on my Micron SCSI system. The hard drive is partitioned for Win95 700MB (running fine) and Linux 500 MB. The Linux partition has 32 MB swap, 51MB root partition, and about 400 MB in a /usr partition. On initial installation (RedHat package CD-ROM) all goes well and I can talk to everything with the exception of the SyQuest removable drive. On mounting the SyJet-S (either in terminal mode or X, which loads fine) as /dev/sdb1 vfat (or msdos) /mnt/rem (I have this directory set up in advance) using defaults or "user, noauto,rw" or any other combination. It mounts okay but on interrogation using 'ls -F', 'cd' or other command the system locks up and the only way out is a hard reset. Sometimes I get the message "scsi0: Tagged Queuing now active for Target 4" then I'm frozen out. I am able to interrogate the DOS partition on the "C" drive just fine; including read and write after mounting it in a similar fashion as noted above. The system will also freeze when using the command 'cdp' (with sndconfig setup and tested okay). When I use the keyboard, it crashes; same thing in Xwindow with XPlaycd, it freezes after 20-50 seconds of play; the music plays on but the system will not respond. Another observation: 'cdplay', from terminal or an X terminal window, will play correctly and does not lock up the system. Although the command 'cdplay stop' does not work. I have also noticed that the system time ('date') losses as much as 30 minutes in an hour if the automatic 'fade to gray' screensaver comes on for that period of time. Keeping it awake, by keeping the system active, the clock is accurate. I have searched for coding that would allow me to turn off the saver but could find none. Since I'm new to Linux, this is no wonder. I have attempted to cure these problems by doing several experiments and much reading of 'HOWTO's, Newsgroups, man pages, tried reinstallation, updating to the 2.0.35-2 kernel, and RedHat installation assistance (no answer yet); all to no avail. I hope that this information is sufficient and that there is someone out there who can be of assistance in leading me to a cure or at least giving me ideas of where to look? My fstab file looks like this: ------------------------------------------- <device> <mountpoint> <filesystemtype> <options> <dump> <fsckorder> /dev/sda5 / ext2 defaults 1 1 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto, user,ro 0 0 /dev/sda1 /mnt/dos vfat defaults 0 0 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy ext2 noauto, user 0 0 /dev/sdb1 /mnt/rem vfat noauto, user,ro 0 0 /dev/sda6 /usr ext2 defaults 1 2 /dev/sda2 none ignore 0 0 0 /dev/sda3 none ignore 0 0 0 none /proc proc defaults /dev/sda7 none swap sw ------------------------------------------ Machine configuration: (as reported by Win95 'system') Micron Millennia Pentium 166: Intel 430HX chipset: 32 MB RAM Video-Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 IRQ-9 SCSI Controller- BusLogic Flashpoint PCI ver.001 IRQ-11 Plextor CD-ROM PX-8XC5 Target-6, LUN-0 Hard Drive: Quantum Fireball 1280S 1.2 GB Target-6 LUN-0 SyQuest SyJet-S Removable 1.5 GB Drive Target-4 LUN-0 Sound- Creative Labs SoundBlaster Vibra-16 IRQ-10 Floppy controller- Std., IRQ-6 PCI Bus Mastering controller-Intel pIIIX, IRQ-15 Primary IDE controller, IRQ-14 Secondary IDE controller, IRQ-15 Keyboard- Std., IRQ-1 Modem- US Robotics Sportster Vi 28.8 on COM2 (cua1) Mouse- PS-2, IRQ-12 --------------------------------------------- Other than these problems, I think the O/S looks rich and I'm having an enjoyable time learning it.
