Xwindows colors

Kind of a silly question... but how do I start xwindows with more than the
default 8 bit colors?  I thought it was something like startx -bpp 16 or
something similar.  I am using a video card with the SiS 6326 chipset which
Im trying to configure with the XSuse_SiS server, so it may be that I just
dont have things set up right, and I cant use 16bit colors.
