X FreeFontPath error.

Just installed RH5.1

I currently have an unsupported video chip - the Sis 5598.
It operates with the vga16 x server, but if I try to change
the x windows manager to say, Afterstep, it crashes, and
won't restart.

I get the following error message...

Waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE
"usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fons/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1;
fixing.

What's the cause, and (hopefully) solution??
