Tape problem: SCSI T4000

I have a customer with a SCSI HP T4000 tape drive in a RH 5.1 machine. The
tape drive seems to work (dumping multiple partitions), but always reports
an I/O error when trying to 'mt fsf' to any file on the tape other than
the first one.  Aside from replacing the drive (which will probably happen
if we can't get it working properly) does anyone know a solution to this
problem?  Anyone know if support for this device improves in more recent
kernels?
