Linux difficult for newbies?

I must agree here. I am finding the learning curve to be very steep from a
solid NT/Win95/networking background. I am trying to get my 5.1 box set up
firstly as a file & print server and then as an Internet gateway (sure...).
The Samba documentation is painful at best for a newbie and so far I have got
no-where. I have read Man pages, How-tos and I have 3 books on Linux and I am
still finding it heavy going.
If only Unix-ites could speak in plain English at a more basic level for the
beginners, rather than making assumptions that you know what they are talking
about, it would make life much easier. Like Windows or not, at least people
can understand and configure their own systems. That's why it has been such a
huge success.
