Screen telltale?

I have RedHat 5.1 installed and in the RH bottom corner of the X screen 
there is a telltale showing the virtual desktop that I am on, CPU usage 
and applications. Does anyone know how to minimise or remove this? And 
if so, do you know how it can be put back again?
