I installed Caldera Openlinux recently on my machine at home.
I has a generic S3 Virge (325 chipset) with 4MB ram.
This card now goes for under 40 bucks.
I get 1152x864 and have no problems with X.
However, I think I messed something up on monitor selection or whatever
because when I toggle though resolutions, it skips 800x600, which is
what I wanted for my 17 inch monitor and also skips 1024x768 !
The card works great in win95 at all resolutions.
I'm sure there are many better cards but this one just keeps trucking.
If I can't get 800x600 in Linux, I may be joining you on your quest.
If you ever get a survey done, post it.
Preferably it would also be fast at 3d games under win95.
