Oh dear lord this sounds like harddrive damage.
Look in the "lost+found" directories and if there
is something wrong then there is usually something 
in there, if so then you hopefully only have
format track damage which is repairable by
backing up what data you can, if you can,
and a re-format and re-instal as much as I hate
to say it, unless someone else has a better idea 
please send it and disregard this letter.
