RE: Linux crash aid request

As always, cheers for the responses.
However, I am still in the dark (a sort of misty grey as opposed to black) as I am
progressing. The following lists the bits I have done, and a further couple of questions.

1.. fsck
	Pressed 'Yes' to clear the first 100 files.
	I then went to fsck -a (which completed after 20 minutes).
	It then rebooted fine.

2.. Log directory

	I lied about there being no log files (I should have looked myself - oops!). Anyway,
	besides Junkbuster (see below), nothing of interest was found in the messages, httpd, etc

	The main bulk of messages from 'fsck' was on JunkBuster log files (The Internet Junkbuster Proxy).
	There were 9899 files in JunkBuster log directory /var/log/junkbuster, almost
	all gzip'ed and all were cleaned, by fsck (although I never counted them).
	I initially thought the system or JunkBuster had not been cleaning itself up, but
	the oldest was less than a month.

	Q : How does the log directory clean itself?
		(ie, there must be a config file which says :
			'When a certain size, archive and start another file'
			'When a certain number of files, remove')

	Q : I haven't been able to find the directory/file size limitations.
		How many files can you have in a directory? What is the limitation?
		How many sub-directories can you have (probably answered above)?

3.. lost+found directory
	The /var/log/lost+found directory was empty.

4.. booting in single user mode, running fsck.ext2
	I booted into single user mode, but am wondering which options to use with
	fsck.ext2 (no man page available).

	Q : What options can I use (where's the doc for it?)

5.. Proceeding
	I can't think of anything else I can do.
	The system is working okay, but I'm a little /curious/scared/hesitant about putting
	it live without knowing more about what happened.
	If you can thing of anything else (any utilities, etc), please shout.

As always, thanks for your help.
Colin PRICE.

Subject: Linux crash aid request

Came in this morning :
	Our reliable Linux box had crashed.
	It had had a good innings (a couple of months).
	Anyway, the following is what I recorded.
	Any help would be appreciated (the more immediate the better).

	Version :
		$ # uname -a
		Linux inbasdev5.ericsson.se 2.2.1 #3 Wed Feb 10 13:29:12 GMT 1999 i686 unknown

	Message on bootup :

		/dev/hda1 : <clean message so assumed ok>
		/dev/hda7 : <clean message so assumed ok>
		/dev/hda6 : <clean message so assumed ok>
		[/sbin/fsk.ext2] fsk.ext2 -a /dev/hda8
		/dev/hda8 : contains a file system with errors, check forced
		/dev/hda8 : Inode 4039 has illegal blocks
		/dev/hda8 : UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY. RUN fsck MANUALLY.

		An error has occurred during the file system check
		Dropping you into a shell the system will reboot and you will leave the shell
		Give root password for maintenance
		(or type ctrl D for normal start-up)

	CTRL-D = boots up and gives the above message
	on root login, drops to a shell :
		$ df -k = shows 1 file system : /root

		$ fsk -a /dev/hda8
		There were several! areas 'cleared'
		This mainly included the /var directory (incl. some /var/timesheet sections)
		(
		For ~25minutes, fsck was in a loop on :
			junkbuster.<number>.gz.<NEXT>
			where	<number> = 1..4
				<NEXT> = (<number>.gz.<NEXT>|<number>.gz)
		)

		but I am very concerned since I have no log files to trace what happened.

Any help is very appreciated.
Regards,
Colin PRICE.
