  You might want to avoid pure plug and pray (play) modems also.  These
can be configured via isatools, but it's kinda ugly.  Any pnp modem with
jumpers to allow you to set resources (io, com port , irq) should work
fine.  External modems are generally easiest under linux.  That said I
use to use an pure pnp modem until I got a dsl line.  It's ugly not
hard.
