Mouse config troubles

I am unable to use my mouse with x windows on red hat 5.2.    I have run
mouseconfig more times than I can count trying all the configs.  My mouse is
just a regular 3 button mouse.  The weird thing is, when i'm not using X
windows, i can move the cursor.  I see the grey rectangle move around the
screen, i can select text and copy it to the prompt.  But, when i run x
windows (startx) I cant get the cursor to do anything.  HELP!!! PLEASE! I'M
LOOSING MY MIND!
