Right, the software appears to be fine. Next step, check the mouse.
Plug it into another box (dos, or linux, no real worry)
If the software appears fine and the mouse looks good, then what is left
is the com port itself. Primary suspect, the bios.
Did com1 get turned off or reassigned? Was com1 reassigned to com3 for
example. Is there anything that interfers with irq4. Are there irq
conflicts in the bios which end up turning the com port into something
worse than useless?
You may even find that doing a screen dump of the bios pages to a
printer, then resetting the bios back to the default settings is the
best answer yet. That way you can be assured that the bios isn't
screwing things up for you, and once you get the mouse going fine you
have the hardcopy printouts to guide you through what you were
originally wanting to achieve.
