RE: Hard drive limit?

I recently ran into this problem.

Linux will not boot if it is past the 8gig limit on the drive. I belive LILO
has problems starting up.

I have a 25 gig hard drive, and was trying to boot both Linux and Win98. It
would never work. (I used Redhat 6).

Here is what I did:

Kill all partitions.

I created one 1 gig partition for Win98 install files/etc to reside on.

Left all other space free.

Installed Win98 onto the one gig partition.

Setup Win98.

Rebooted using the Redhat 6 install disk.

Created all of my Linux partitions using disk druid.
(12 meg--> /boot, 4 gig--> /, 100 meg--> swap)

Went into the fdisk program.

For whatever reason Disk Druid lumped all of my unallocated HD space into
one 20 gig extended partition that is not readable by Win98. (trust me on
that! damn win98!)

I changed the partition type from extended to Win95 extended LBA. (value 05
to value 0f)

Saved partitions and quit fdisk.

Continued with Redhat installation.

Put LILO in the Master Boot Record.

Finished Redhat install.

Rebooted

Boot to Windows 98.

Go to My Computer in Win98

Formatted the new D: drive.

Checked my drive info and I had: C--> 1 gig D-->20 gig E-->CD-ROM

Note: once you have the Windows partition setup make sure you don't delete
it! It's most likely the #1 partition in both fdisk and Disk Druid, make
sure you don't delete it unless you want to reinstall windows! It takes a
lot longer to install than Redhat!!

Hope that helped!!

Subject: Hard drive limit?

I am a new user of Linux and recently purchased Red Hat 5.2. I was
looking forward to installing it on my brand new IBM Aptiva model 530
(AMD-K6-2; 475MHz), and using Lilo to dual boot Linux and Win 98.

First I backed up my DOS files and removed the drive partition. Then I
made a primary DOS partition to take up 2/3 the drive. I ran the Linux
installation program by booting from the CD, intending to use the
remaining 1/3 of my hard drive for Linux. When I got to the disk druid
program, I couldn't make any Linux partitions because the program
indicated I had negative hard drive space free.

>From what I can deduce, either Linux or the disk druid program only
recognizes an 8 Gb drive size, and my hard drive is 12.9 Gb. Is there
any way to work around this? Or would I have to buy a more recent
version of Red Hat, say 6.0?
