RE: DNS..

Linux linux,

I get great trouble in making redhat 8.2.x BIND from rh6.0 up and running.

Do you mind give me some hints?
Says, your sample resolv.conf, named.conf, files in /var/named/ ? Or above
all else, am I missing any file that I forget to modify ?

Once I start dns, all telnet and ftp to this server take at least a minute
to show me the login prompt. If I shut it down by "ndc stop", all login
prompts shows in a second in the same LAN segment. Any idea ?

My hands are crossed for help from you guys !!!! *_*

Regards,
Alfee

Subject: Re: DNS..

Finally after some hours of work I've gotten my DNS up and running for mye
LAN. Still there are some problems.. (This is a closed LAN with no dialup or

any Internet connection at all). I only want DNS up and running so when
connecting my other friends for gaming, copying etc
we have a dhcpd, ftp, quake & dns++ up and running. My DNS status is this:

3 computers:
192.168.1.50 - timegate (timegate.skauen.no)
Main linux, ftp, dhcpd, dns, quake servers ++
192.168.1.60 - alien (alien.skauen.no)
Second Linux (running various stuff, X-win, Quake 1,2 & 3 clients)
192.168.1.70 - elwolfie (elwolfie.skauen.no)
Win98 main machine (all kinds of stuff :))

All the machines are getting a ip from the dhcpd which is reservering
an address for these 3 machines via mac-adresses. If i run ifconfig
(ipconfig in win98) I can see that the dns server is in the config
(192.168.1.50).

from elwolfie:
  ping alien
  ping alien.skauen.no
  tracert alien
  tracert alien.skauen.no
  ftp alien
works fine.
  ping timegate
  ping timegate.skauen.no
  tracert timegate
  tracert timegate.skauen.no
  ftp timegate
also works fine.

from timegate:
all of the above works fine for both of the other machines.

from alien (second linux):
only ping and tracert to itself and timegate works. Alien cant resolv
or "see" elwolfie except for the pure ip-adress (ping 192.168.70).

Something must be wrong locally on that alien computer.
Suggestions?

running nslookup 192.168.1.60 or 70 does not work on timegate
(main dns computer). Suggestions?

Thx for all the help!

ElWolfie
