Re: i740 w/Linux

I still have not been able to set up the video card. I did find a way around it though. When you install choose VGA. You should then get a normal sized screen. The colours are not always great. But, it will work until I figure out how to change it to work with my card properly.

I perused www.XFree86.org and all the information there indicates i740s are
supported by XFree86 3.3.4. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it to download and
after I do don't know the process for installing.
One of the FAQ after installing 3,3,4 was "No such file or directory".
They gave as the most common reason if you installed the Linux-ix86-glibc
binaries when you don't have GNU libe 2 (aka libe 6 ). The solution is to
install the Linux-ix86 binaries, which are the correct ones for most
situations.
(It didn't mean anything to me). It's obvious that i740 is supported by
3.3.4. Finding it and installing has me baffled.
My RH 6.0 is loaded but I need to get the screen a lot smaller so I can
scroll to hit some buttons. Found something that indicated removing all but
600X800 resolution from Xconfig may work. Thought I did that in setup but
they say it searches for larger.
Part of my problem is that I don't know the commands for moving around,
changing and editing. I'm going to study the basics. The RH6.0 books are not
user friendly in this regard.
Im using a 300MHZ PII I put together. Using 128mgs RAM, 8.4G HDD, and 3 OS.
Have WIN98se as Primary, MS-DOS622, and RH 6.0 loaded. Using the Partition
Magic -Boot to select OS on startup. I get around good in 98 and DOS but RH
60 was my introduction to Linux.
Appreciate your help.
