Ok, maybe I assumed too much from your initial post. Some questions:

1. Are you logging in from text login prompt or the GUI login screen
(from xdm, gdm, kdm(?), et al.)?

And that leads to the next question:

2. Does the problem occur in a text screen or the X Window environment?
THE PROBLEM OCCURS IN BOTH ENVIRONMENTS

3. What is the response to

echo $TERM

LINUX IN TEXT ENV.
XTERN IN X WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT

in the problem environment?
