Ok, and is there a /usr/share/terminfo/l/linux and a
/usr/share/terminfo/x/xterm? Can mere mortals (as opposed to root) read
them?
If they are not there (Ok, 6.0 veterans - 6.0 didn't move the terminfos
from the ncurses package, did they?) and ncurses is installed, I'm
befuddled and I pass the baton to anyone else who cares to take a shot.
(I'm still running 5.2.)
By the way,

What do you mean "no entry for terminfo"?
If they are there, my only other guess is that /usr/lib/libtermcap.so is
missing, but I would think the executable (ld, actually, I think) would
carp loudly about that when it attempted to load.
