I read that samba run via NetBIOS or IPS/SPX. Is that able to run samba via
purely TCP/IP ?

Q: What is SAMBA?

A: A program that runs on a UNIX or Linux machine that provides
the same services as would an MS Windows NT Server. That is, user
authentification, file and printer sharing all using the SMB
    protocol.

In short in makes your Linux system look at an NT server to your
    Win95 systems.
