Nick,
I had trouble with my ESS 1968 sound card.  I stumbled onto a company that has
Linux drivers for sound cards.  The URL is:

I don't know if this will help you or not.  I hope so.  Anyway, now I can
finally listen to CD's while developing Linux software!!!
