Rh 6.0 Lockup

I installed RH 6.0 successfully on a virgin P III 500. I chose NOT
to start X upon login.  After starting X, Gnome comes up, then the
terminal, mouse, and keyboard lock
up and I can no longer get access to the machine directly.

The only way I can get access to the machine is remotely, so I
can reboot OK that way.  

Any ideas?
