perl routines for rpm comparison wished

Before we spent sometime writing a set of perl subroutines
that would nicely compare the name of 2 rpm packages to
determine which one is more recent, I would like to ask
if anybody (certainly better than me in perl) has some
interesting proposition. I would love that it includes
treatement of "pre", "beta", "STABLE" and all kind of invented
names.
The reason to ask is that I am sure that many people need
that as a tool.
