Gnome may be the culprit. It gives many (meself included) problems.
Swap 32M is sure to be a problem, especially running gnome or kde. I
have almost 200MB, which is overkill normally but, was necessary for a
particular program to compile. 60~100 would be more appropriate. I'd
personally lean toward the larger, space permitting.
You can add more with a file instead of a partition. Type 'man mkswap'
to get an example of how to create it. It goes into fstab like the
regular swap partition does.
