Recompile Kernel?

If this is not the correct place to ask these questions would someone please
tell me where to ask.

How do I recompile the RH6 kernel?

Will recompiling the kernel cause me to lose my current installation?

I'm trying to install a program that requires changes to some of the shared
memory settings.  There's no other way around this.  The settings can not be
changed without a recompile of the kernel.

Any help appreciated.
