You should just follow the directions on the Kernel HOWTO- you can find it
at RedHat, i believe, or at
http://www.metalab.unc.edu/linux/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html
The directions are pretty clear and straightforward.
I have recompiled a couple of times (although i'm pretty new at this, so
if i say something wrong, someone please correct me!) and as far as I can
tell, all of the current installation/configuration remains untouched.
You need to change some things like insertable modules, which may be
upgraded between kernel versions, and System.map (i found this out from
begging on the mailing list), but otherwise everything stays the same.
